全台第一個蛋糕誕生—————無法抗拒的黑色滋味
1960年,簡錦錐繼俄羅斯人承接明星,但接手那天,發現做麵包、蛋糕的師傅都走了!簡錦錐以「有事不要怕事」的心態,打越洋電話到香港,請朋友找製作蛋糕的書,就這樣一端說一端抄,做出全台第一個巧克力蛋糕、蛋糕塔。有趣的是,當時社會視黑色不吉祥,但巧克力的滋味讓大家無法抗拒、廣受好評!更讓附近蛋糕店相繼效仿製作巧克力蛋糕。明星的多層蛋糕塔更被譽為『總統蛋糕』,是歷任總統、達官顯要派對上的氣派美味。

When Archibald Chien took over Café Astoria from his Russian partners, he was left with a bakery with no master bread and pastry chefs. Undeterred, he called a friend in Hong Kong to help track down cake cook books and had the friend recite the recipes over the phone for him to write down the recipes. This was how Taiwan’s first chocolate cake and cake tower were born. At the time, black was seen as an unlucky color. But Astoria’s dark-colored chocolate cake proved too irresistible and soon became a popular favorite, inspiring other nearby cake shops to follow suit. The café’s prestigious multi-layer cake towers have been served at the parties of Presidents and high-ranking officials, earning it a reputation as the “President Cake.”
